Prayer Pebbles
In 1st Corinthians, Chapter 3, the Apostle Paul uses the symbolism of a building to describe the Christian Community. He declares that Jesus is the only foundation but indicates that every Christian builds upon that foundation with a life of service and devotion.
"And coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected by men, but choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (I Peter 2:4-5)
We who confess our faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of the Living God are the stones that are being used to build the Church. The stones we received today symbolize our lives:
- They are all different...
- They come in all sizes, shapes and colors - just like we do;
- Some are worn smooth by time - just like some of us;
- Some are rough and jagged - just like some of us;
- Some are broken and chipped - just like some of us.
So, we ask you to take one rock or "prayer pebble" as your stone to represent your life. It represents you. Take it home with you and place it where you will see it daily. When you see it, pray for the Church and think about your important part in its ministry.
All of these stones should be brought back to the Church on Sunday, December 18th, where they will be collected and eventually, in some fashion, be incorporated into the new Family Life Center. Just as we are the building stones of God's eternal Church, this new physical building is built with our very lives also. Jesus is the foundation and we are the living stones with which the Church is built.
